  • Conference - Global Crisis and Democratic Transition in Southern Europe: a Political History

On the fiftieth anniversary of Greece’s transition to democracy in 1974, the Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy organizes an international conference with the title “Global Crisis and Democratic Transition in Southern Europe: a Political History”

The conference will examine the Southern European transition to democracy in 1974-1977. The speakers will discuss developments in the three countries directly concerned, namely, Portugal, Greece and Spain: political actors, political parties, the military, as well as the role of the Constitutions and of economic modernization (and Europeanization) as enablers of the transition. Moreover, they will revisit the challenges that Italian democracy was facing in the same period, the role of the superpowers, both the US and the Soviet Union, as well as the impact of European countries, larger and small, and the European Communities. Last but not least, developments in Yugoslavia and in the wider Mediterranean area will also be discussed. Although the emphasis is, as the title suggests, on political history, the event will also have a salient interdisciplinary character, combining the approaches of historians, political scientists, international relations scholars and constitutional experts.

The event will be held in Athens, at the Hall of the Senate of the Greek Parliament, on 13-14 December 2024. It will be launched by the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Constantine A. Tassoulas, on Friday 13 December, at 16:30.

The working language of the conference is English.
