The Hellenic Parliament Foundation for Parliamentarism and Democracy is organizing an international conference titled "The Evolution of Modern Constitutional Democracy: Threats and Challenges."
In our days, while democracy nominally expands worldwide it is also simultaneously threatened by a surge of autocracy and the strengthening of antiliberal populism. Recent developments seem to be transforming domestic and global political and economic agendas. The current context offers therefore a good opportunity to reflect from a philosophical and normative point of view on the prospects of evolution but also on the risks of corruption of contemporary constitutional democracy. Can democracy further evolve without losing ultimately its essence as a regime of equal freedom? Are philosophical ideas capable of inspiring new and politically more effective interpretations that could render democracy politically stable domestically and attractive internationally?
The conference will take place in Athens: on October 21, 2026, in the Senate Hall of the Hellenic Parliament; and on Thursday, October 22, and Friday, October 23, 2026, in the events hall of the Hellenic Parliament building at 22-24 Amalias Avenue (entrance via Rallou Manou Square). The working language will be English.
Admission is free upon presentation of an ID card.
